MADISON, WI – The Wisconsin Elections Commission office will be open Friday evening and on Saturday to provide copies of documents needed to file challenges to candidates’ nomination papers.
Friday, June 1, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. is the deadline for candidates to file nomination papers to get on the ballot for the August 14 Partisan Primary and the November 6 General Election. After paperwork has been filed, opposing candidates and political parties have the opportunity to examine nomination papers to see whether there are any errors they may wish to challenge.
Interim Administrator Meagan Wolfe said the Commission offices will remain open to the public between 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday and will also be open between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday. “Because a weekend falls between the two deadlines, we want to ensure the public has adequate time to examine the nomination papers and make copies if necessary,” Wolfe said.
The deadline for filing challenges to nomination papers is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 4. Wolfe said the Commission will not accept challenges between 5:00 p.m. Friday and when normal hours resume at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, June 4.
Wolfe said the WEC staff will be working throughout the weekend to process candidates’ nomination papers in preparation for the Commission’s meeting on June 11 to consider challenges and approve the ballot for the August 14 Partisan Primary.
Because of the volume of paperwork being filed and the tight deadlines, it is not practical to post copies of the candidates’ documents on the agency’s website. Members of the public and the media may inspect and copy candidates’ nomination papers at the Elections Commission office, 212 East Washington Ave., Third Floor, Madison. Photocopies are 15 cents per page and electronic scans are 7 cents per page.
