As of April 1, 2025, a state law protects the personal information of Wisconsin judicial officers and judicial candidates. Judicial officers are current or former Wisconsin judges. Federal judges are not currently covered by the law. Judicial Officers can submit a form from the State Courts office to request that state agencies and private data brokers remove their personal information from publicly available sources. The attached Information Sheet provides information on how the Commission will withdraw and protect personal information for judicial officers who submit a data privacy request. If you are a judicial officer and you are interested in protecting your personal information, please contact the Director of State Courts office.
In addition, judicial officers and judicial candidates can file a certification of residence with the Wisconsin Elections Commission to be exempt from listing their residential address on nomination papers and declarations of candidacy, and to write “Residence Certified with WEC” in lieu of that information. The form for requesting certification of residence is available on this webpage, along with a draft of the administrative rule text that explains the Commission's policy for handling certification of residence requests, example forms, and a clerk communication. This draft is currently in the promulgation process and does not have the force of law, but it explains how the Commission will be administering the law until a rule is in effect.
Along with submitting this form, judicial officers or candidates must provide a proof of residency document under Wis. Stat. § 6.34(3) for the Commission to verify the residential address. All documents, or questions about the process, can be submitted electronically to @email with “Judicial Application Form” in the subject line.
