This week, the Wisconsin Elections Commission mailed nearly 384,000 postcards to Wisconsin residents who were identified as being potentially eligible to vote but are not currently registered to vote. These postcards were sent as part of Wisconsin’s participation in ERIC, an inter-state voter registration data sharing consortium. A similar mailing was previously done in the fall of 2016.
The people who are receiving this postcard have been issued either a driver license or state ID card from the Wisconsin DOT that could not be matched to an active voter record in WisVote. The postcard asks the voter to go to myvote.wi.gov and register online or check their registration status. The postcard also includes a toll-free number which routes them to the WEC Help Desk.
While the postcard directs voters to contact the WEC, some voters may contact their municipal or county clerk in response to this postcard.
Some registered voters may inadvertently receive the postcard. These situations generally occur when voter data in WisVote does not match the same voter’s data at DOT, so ERIC was unable to determine that the voter was already registered. In these cases, please assure the voter that they are registered, and correct any data issues in WisVote.
People who receive the postcard may choose to register by mail, at their clerk’s office, or at their polling place on Election Day rather than registering online. The ERIC postcard can be used as proof of residence if the name and address on the ERIC postcard match the information on the registration form. In WisVote, use the POR Type of “Other Government Document” and POR Entity of WEC. It is not necessary to enter a POR Account # since there is no account or tracking number on the card.
These mailings are not tracked in WisVote and will not result in any voters being deactivated. These mailings do not impact the ERIC Supplemental Poll List process being used in the 2018 Partisan Primary for voters who received the 2017 ERIC Movers mailing.
If you have any questions regarding the 2018 ERIC Eligible but Unregistered postcards, please contact the Elections Help Desk at [email protected] or 608-261-2028.
