Statement on Joint Committee on Finance Action on WEC Biennial Budget Request

MADISON, WI – Michael Haas, interim administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, issued the following statement:

“We are pleased that the Joint Committee on Finance has voted to provide the Commission with state funding for 21 of 22 positions for which federal funding will expire in 2018.  We appreciate that both the Governor and Legislature are ensuring long-term funding stability which will allow the Commission to hire and retain high-quality staff, and to ensure that Wisconsin’s voters, local election officials and candidates continue to receive excellent customer service.  We will reevaluate our staffing plan in light of losing one authorized position in the new budget.  At some point, the Commission may need to determine whether to seek additional funding for the remaining position.  In the meantime we will continue to use our available staffing and resources to ensure fair, open and accurate elections across Wisconsin.”
