MADISON, WI – The deadlines to run for Assembly District 11 and Waupaca County District Attorney have been extended until 5 p.m. Monday, June 6.
State Representative Mandela Barnes (Milwaukee District 11) and Waupaca County District Attorney John P. Snider did not file nomination papers by the deadline Wednesday to seek reelection. Because they did not notify the Government Accountability Board that they would not be candidates for the offices they currently hold, state law requires the filing deadlines to be extended, said Elections Division Administrator Michael Haas.
“The law requiring a deadline extension when the incumbent does not file a notification of noncandidacy is designed to prevent a retiring incumbent from giving an advantage to a potential successor,” Haas said. “More candidates are likely to run if they know the incumbent is not running again.”
In Assembly District 11, two other candidates have filed to run for the seat. In Waupaca County, one candidate has filed the required paperwork to run for district attorney.
For information about how to run, potential candidates should visit the Board’s website: http://www.gab.wi.gov/elections-voting/candidates/state/partisan, and may call the G.A.B. Help Desk at 608-261-2028. Candidates need to file nomination papers with a minimum of 200 valid signatures at the Board’s office in Madison by the new deadline.
A list of all candidates who filed by the deadline is available on the Board’s web site: http://gab.wi.gov/elections-voting/2016/fall.
