Governor Evers today announced revised dates for the special election to fill the vacancy in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional district. The announcement indicated that the amended Executive Order will be issued on Saturday, October 19 and will establish the following election dates and deadlines:
- The special primary (if necessary) will be held in conjunction with the 2020 spring primary on February 18, 2020.
- The special election will be held on May 12, 2020.
- Nomination papers will still be due to the Wisconsin Elections Commission by 5:00 p.m. on December 2, 2019.
- The starting date for circulating nomination papers remains September 23, 2019.
An amended Type A Notice will be issued by the WEC on Monday, October 21, after the Governor issues the Executive Order and it will be sent directly to all counties in the district.
WEC staff is also working on an amended calendar of election dates for local election officials in Congressional District 7 and will make that available once it has been updated and verified. Additional information regarding the special election will be provided once the details of the election have been clarified by the Executive Order.
A special meeting of the Elections Commission was held on October 16, 2019 to address potential issues with nomination paper signatures due to the anticipated change in special election dates. The Commission determined that it will accept signatures on nomination petitions that candidates have already collected, despite the change in election dates, which is consistent with the amended executive order.
