This page contains important information for candidates running for local, nonpartisan offices in counties, municipalities and school districts.  Please consult the Ballot Access Checklists for information about the documents candidates must file to get on the ballot, as well as deadlines for filing.  All checklists have been updated for the Spring 2019 Election cycle.

Campaign Finance

Local candidates should visit the Local Campaign Finance page on the Wisconsin Ethics Commission website for information about campaign finance registration and reporting. 


County Offices: County Executive, County Supervisor, County Comptroller

Note: A county may enact an ordinance establishing a code of ethics for public officials that may require a candidate for county office to file a Statement of Economic Interests (SEI). Please contact the county clerk to find out if this requirement applies.


Municipal Offices: Mayor, Alderperson, Town and Village Board Member, Municipal Clerk and Treasurer, and Municipal Judge

Registered Write-In Candidates

To register as a write-in candidate, you must file a Campaign Registration Statement (CF-1) must be filed with the filing officer prior to collecting or spending any money on the campaign. The CF-1 form is available from the Wisconsin Ethics Commission's website or the local filing officer. The deadline to register as a write-in candidate is 12:00 p.m. (noon) the Friday before the election.
