At today’s executive session, the Joint Committee on Finance voted to reinstate 5 of our 6 positions which are currently federally funded but were not included in the Governor’s budget proposal.  If approved by the Legislature, 21 of our 22 federally funded positions will convert to state-funded general purpose revenue (GPR) positions when the federal Help America Vote Act funds expire.  While we advocated for all 6 positions being included because we thought they will continue to be necessary, the approval to continue 21 of the positions as permanent GPR positions is a very big step forward in ensuring the stability of the agency and our staff.

I wanted to pass along not only this news but my thanks to the county and municipal clerks who contacted their legislators and Joint Finance Committee members to provide their input regarding the WEC budget.  Several legislators commented that they had heard from many local clerks regarding the value of the guidance and assistance that staff provides on a daily basis.  Your feedback added credibility to the arguments we made regarding the resources we need to serve local election officials, voters and candidates.

This is a good step forward and the result of much effort over many months, so I wanted to take a moment to say thank you.  We will certainly follow additional legislative activity regarding the budget and let you know when there is other news to report.
